When I was in the Army we always took our gas masks whenever we went out on field exercises, it’s just standard equipment. I’m betting US troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, Viet Nam, Korea, etc., also carried gas masks.
Thank you, I knew about the M50 and it’s variants when I retired from everything in 2012. While I was still in the business, the M50’s arrived in the mid 90’s but were not put into service until 2009 and not really issued in mass until 2014 when Avon Protection received a contract to supply 135,000 M50s for around $33 million. They must have made the transition from the M40’s to M50’s very rapidly if history is any indication and the amount they needed.
Even when the M40’s were being transitioned in they still used the M17’s. The M40’s were originally being brought in in the early 90’s. So you can see they were slow in getting them to the troops. I was still active duty into the mid 90’s and we never saw them and were still using the M17’s and, due to shortages of practice masks, were in some cases still using the M2’s for exercises.
