Thanks RoosterRedux.
Israel has no faith in Western sanctions. We already know that no one will come and fight with us for our existence as the only truly democratic state in the Middle East because the West has shown us it hasn’t got the spine to stand with a democracy against a massive Communist aggression within Europe.

My reaction to the article was mixed. The initial premise, that the US must stand shoulder to shoulder with the EU in defending Ukraine, is something with which I disagree. The Ukraine is not a place for American military personnel to die. This is a European fight and the Europeans have shown little stomach for it. Perhaps, as in the past, the Europeans expect the US to spend the lives of its troops, and squander its treasure, to support an endemically corrupt country. This is not something we must do. However, I do agree with the writer's second premise that Israel is alone in its fight with Iran. Clearly, Israel benefits from US aid, although it is required to spend a substantial portion of that aid in the US. But, particularly with the current Administration, Israel must not expect any help in its coming fight with Iran, a fight that will come after the US appeases the Ayatollahs with a new deal that opens a pathway to nuclear weapons.

Russia knows the trump card is to threaten the use of nukes. When he decides to take the Baltics, Poland or anything else he’ll use the threat again to paralyze the western nations. No one will be willing to call it a bluff.

EU/NATO members have sent weapons, even the US has done this. NATO exists because the USSR was a threat, and Putin's gangster state is still a threat. In a generation or so, it'll be a nuclear-armed dictatorship run by muzzies. That isn't happening because of what goes on outside Russia.

Start a thread about Egypt saying they are “alone” in feeding their population and I would definitely comment on that.

Yes, Israel must fight with their own soldiers, but they have never been “alone” in the fight.

I remember the lead-up to the Iraq War.

One incessant talking point was that Saddam was paying $25,000 to every Palestinian suicide bomber's family.

Another talking point was that Saddam was close to building a nuclear bomb which would threaten Israel.

So yeah, the U.S. fought Iraq at least partially because the Israeli lobby wanted Saddam taken out.

Taiwan and Israel have no such treaties and should not expect much help.

I've been told that LBJ offered a defense treaty to Israel, but Israel declined.

The reason was that such treaties impose reciprocal obligations, which restrict what can or can't be done. Israel didn't want to be obligated to, or restricted by, the U.S. in any way. Israel was already receiving all the benefits of an alliance (more foreign military aid than any other single nation), so why sign a treaty?

I don't know why Taiwan doesn't have a treaty. Perhaps because it would provoke China?

LBJ was an aggressive enemy of Israel.

He cut off the sharing of security information with Israel which had existed until he became president.
