The H5N1 Bird Flu in Indiana is the real thing. One afternoon there is no sign of it, and the next morning there are hundreds of dead birds everywhere. It’s really “Get out the flamethrowers” time.
They regularly get outbreaks in Hong Kong, and they have systematically wiped out every chicken in the city several times now, doing an intense cleaning, and bringing in all new birds.
Worst assignment I ever had was a TDY to California to kill chickens in an outbreak of VVND. Thousands of them...
I just don’t understand why our all caring government is not pushing for everyone to take all other vaccines for diseases with even higher potential mortality rates? Why haven’t those been mandated? Will they mandate the bird flu vaccine now too.
This country is under attack, from within and without.

Problem is, if one has a small flock and the enclosures use chicken wire, small birds will get in to try to get at the feed, contaminating the chickens.
If one free ranges their poultry the problem is greater.
Big operations that keep their poultry completely sealed off from outdoor birds (or separated by double layers of fine mesh) are at less risk. But it is still possible for a worker to bring in a pathogen by physical transfer (not by being a carrier) if not careful.
It’s not quite the same situation, but I recall having to do some serious mitigation of hoof-and-mouth disease when I was travelling from Cagayan de Oro to Davao, Philippines, ~20 years ago, and I was not stepping foot on any farms.

Yeah, these idiots and / or ignorants on here should get that job for a couple days.
TO CERTAIN POSTERS: This is not a direct health threat to humans. It IS a considerable agricultural threat. If people are “ill” about rising food prices now, just wait until bird flu takes out a chunk of the chicken supply.
