The first international team to play in the Stanley Cup was the Portland (OR) Rosebuds in 1916. The first international team to win the Stanley Cup was the Seattle Metropolitans in 1917. Seattle also played in the 1919 Stanley Cup which was cancelled after 5 games (2-2-1) because of the Spanish Flu. Seattle then lost the 1920 Stanley Cup. The next international team to play in the Stanley Cup was Boston (lost) in 1927, and then the New York Rangers won it in 1928.

Aw, that's not nearly as much fun as rounding them up, with the armed goons, barking dogs , search lights and herding them all into box cars to be taken away to vaccination camps''.

You are well named. And a credit to Seattle (or at least Washington).

I’m from the South Coast of Oregon, and the swamp next to which I grew up “froze” solid enough to walk on a little bit perhaps twice during my youth. The Oregon that I grew up in boasted at least two, and perhaps five ice rinks. God did not mean for Oregonians to play hockey.

I found out long after the fact that my Grandfather used to sneak an airhorn into Portland Winterhawks games, but God still did not mean for Oregonians to play hockey.

I was aware of the Spanish flu season. The rest was news to me.

However, my point about the Flyers was that it was an all-Canadian team. And the Warren Zenon song makes the point about the mercenary aspect of Canadians who export both the sport and the players. For another good song by him about mercenaries, try “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner” (it has a soft spot in my heart, both because I am half Norwegian, and I am, metaphorically, trying to “help out the Congolese.)
