But currently it is looking like Djokovic never had the vaccine exemption he claimed to have, which means he tried to enter Australia under false pretences. And, if that is the case, then I certainly don't believe he should be allowed in.
I don't believe in, or support, vaccine mandates.
But it is the cornerstone of Australian border policy that we decide who comes here. And you don't get to lie your way in.
If Djokovic can find a legal way to get in, good luck to him.
And I hope we're being told the truth. I doubt the Prime Minister would lie on this, but things are such a mess here right now, I wouldn't totally rely on him necessarily having 100% accurate information.
The situation right now is that the wheels are off the bus vaccination is no guarantee of not getting COVID as omicron spreads like wildfire.
Travel spreads Omicron for one thing so at least the “woke” Kiwi leader Jacinda Ardern is ahead of the game keeping the border tight over there in New Zealand.
The rest of the world wide open and numbers will explode all over.
This show with the tennis player a bit of a sideshow in the midst of the Omicron drama.
Hasn’t Djokovic had COVID? If so, he has immunity which is better than any vaccine, if I understand the science c correctly.
Recovery immunity ages just like any other sort. It’s not forever. It will be statistical. Some will be immune a couple of weeks. Some for 6 months.
Australia has greatly embarrassed itself. Your tennis tournament in Melbourne is now just an exhibition, not a championship. And if I was Rod Laver I’d ask to have my name taken off the arena.
This reminds me a bit of the days when East German female athletes were built like football linebackers.
He needs to be allowed in!
Okay so New Zealand wants to remain isolated from the world? If so, that’s their choice.....
Only one conclusion:
Scott Morrison,and Australian politicians,
Yeah - Australia’s Christian conservative Prime Minister is a dumb ass because you’ve believed the crap you’ve been spoonfed on the internet.
This is a deliberate tactic to try and undermine conservative Christian leadership of Australia and people like you just swallow it and spread it.
Without a visa and an exemption approved, Djokovic would not be allowed to board a flight to Australia in the first place as Australian borders are still closed to foreigners.
Another BS from the PM Morrison, desperate to gain some traction in a election year.
Not true. There have been numerous cases of people getting onto airliners without appropriate paperwork to enter Australia. Airlines are applying some rules but not necessarily the same ones Australian Border Force applies.
I think he had an exemption to play in the tournament, but his people didn’t file for the right type of Visa?
Listen...As an expat Aussie, I know very well the situation in regards to Australia and its borders.
You cannot enter Australia currently as a foreigner and if you are not within certain visa categories like student etc. If you have any another visa you need an exemption request approved by the ABF.
What Morrison is saying is absolute BS, unless the ABF had given a visa approval Djokovic would not be able to board a flight in the first place. Unless Djokovic flew charter and even charter flights require approval from ABF.
Airlines know these rules as it is their business, so for your to claim that they don’t apply these rules is laughable.
Sorry, nat, but natural immunity from having had the wu-flu is the best form of immunity. In Australia, as in America and some other places, the worst thing that ever happened to medicine is politics.
Why are you defending Australia’s Draconian policies? Djokovic is one of the best conditioned athletes in the world and already had Covid, he is no threat to anyone or himself. If he is banned, I hope he declares he will never set foot in the country again.
Djokovic wasn’t the only one exempted; there are others. no-one is concerned about the rest.
PM trailing badly in polls; federal election looming; PM’s favorite media hacks have been merciless about Djokovic - and only Djokovic - whipping up hostility against him. PM thinks he’ll crawl back up in the polls with his intervention to stop Djokoviic. time will tell:
5 Jan: Fox Sports: Djokovic one of ***‘only a handful’ approved as number of Australian Open exemption bids revealed
by Marc McGowan from Nca Newswire
***Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley has revealed that tennis players and staff made 26 medical exemption applications but only “a handful” were granted.
World No.1 Novak Djokovic confirmed on Tuesday night that he was among the successful people, including some other players, who received an exemption via the multi-step independent review process...

5 Jan: Fox Sports: Full details of Novak’s exemption as mystery surrounds world No.1’s ‘medical information’
by Frank Chung from News.com.au
It remains unclear what the exact grounds were, but Mr Tiley said all applications were assessed according to guidelines from the federal government’s vaccine advisory group, the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI).
“The grounds are the same grounds that anyone can get a medical exemption, any Australian returning home or international guest,” Mr Tiley said.
“There are several reasons why they are unable to be vaccinated, ATAGI have set out very clear guidelines that have to be followed in order for you to be added to the Australian Immunisation Register, and if you’re added to that register you are then exempt from vaccination and can come into Australia.”...
During a press conference on Wednesday morning, the acting Victorian Sports Minister Jaala Pulford said there was a “robust” process for any incoming tennis players seeking an exemption.
***Mr Tiley said exemptions could be given for reasons such as “anaphylactic response, myocarditis, a poor response to any kind of vaccination, or having had Covid in the last six months”.
“These are all conditions of which you are allowed to come into Australia on,” he said...
***He revealed that 26 athletes and their support staff had made applications for vaccine exemptions and only a “handful” had been granted...
What are grounds for exemption?
ATAGI released its most recent guidance (LINK) “acute major medical conditions” that warrant a temporary medical exemption for Covid-19 vaccines on November 26.
For the Pfizer or Moderna mRNA Covid-19 vaccines:
• Inflammatory cardiac illness within the past three months, e.g., myocarditis or pericarditis; acute rheumatic fever or acute rheumatic heart disease (i.e., with active myocardial inflammation); or acute decompensated heart failure
For all other Covid-19 vaccines including AstraZeneca:
• Acute major medical condition (e.g. undergoing major surgery or hospital admission for a serious illness). Typically, these are time-limited conditions (or the medical treatment for them is time limited)
• PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, where vaccination can be deferred until 6 months after the infection. Vaccination should be deferred for 90 days in people who have received anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibody or convalescent plasma therapy
• Any serious adverse event attributed to a previous dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, without another cause identified, and with no acceptable alternative vaccine available. For example a person under 60 years of age, contraindicated to receive Pfizer vaccine and in whom the risks do not outweigh the benefits for receipt of AstraZeneca vaccine, is eligible for a temporary exemption
• If the vaccine is a risk to themselves or others during the vaccination process they may warrant a temporary vaccine exemption. This may include a range of individuals with underlying developmental or mental health disorders, but noting that non-pharmacological interventions can safely facilitate vaccination in many individuals with behavioural disturbances and that specialist services may be available to facilitate the safe administration of vaccines in this population
ATAGI says chronic Covid-19 symptoms, aka “Long Covid”, are not a contraindication to Covid-19 vaccines “but do warrant a clinical discussion with the patient”.
“Pregnancy is not a valid reason for exemption in the absence of any of the criteria listed above,” ATAGI adds.
An adverse reaction to a previous dose of a Covid-19 vaccine is only considered “serious” if it meets three criteria:
***• It requires in-patient hospitalisation or prolongation of existing hospitalisation, results in persistent or significant disability/incapacity, or is potentially life-threatening
• It has been reported to a state/territory adverse event surveillance system and/or the Therapeutic Goods Administration
• It has been determined following review by, and/or on the opinion of, an experienced immunisation provider/medical specialist to be associated with a risk of recurrence of the serious adverse event if another dose is given...

5 Jan: news.com.au: ‘No one knew who the applicant was’: No ‘special treatment’ in Djokovic medical exemption
Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley has defended the integrity of the process which has allowed tennis star Novak Djokovic an exemption to compete at the Australian Open.
***Mr Tiley explained Mr Djokovic was one of 26 “blind applicants” assessed by an independent panel of epidemiologists and doctors before proceeding to a second panel set up by the government for further assessment.
“No one knew who the applicant was,” Mr Tiley told a media conference on Wednesday.
***“There were 26 applicants through the process – there’s ***A HANDFUL which were provided with an exemption and that information only gets disclosed by those individuals on the grounds of which they were provided an exemption,” Mr Tiley said.
“That’s personal, private, confidential medical information that we are not at liberty to share publicly – but it’s very clear on the ATAGI guidelines … on what conditions you’d receive an exemption on.”...

The decision to grant the tennis player a medical exemption from Covid-19 vaccination has been met with fury
from replies: Glenn Greenwald · 12h
This absurd debacle over whether Novak Djokovic can enter Australia and play in the Australian Open despite being unvaccinated illustrates so much of the theater and bullshit embedded in COVID policy. There’s not an iota of science or public health driving any of this madness...

6 Jan: news.com.au: New twist as two more drawn into Novak Djokovic exemption drama
The drama swirling around Novak Djokovic has taken another turn, with multiple other players now involved.
by James Matthey, Andrew McMurtry and Mathew Murphy; with AFP
In a potentially massive twist, Reuters and The Herald Sun have reported other players with similar exemptions to Djokovic’s have already entered the country without incident.
Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews has since said authorities are examining those players to ensure there have been no breaches of border rules.
By the afternoon, the ABC’s Andrew Greene tweeted: “Tennis Australia is believed to have granted exemption letters to two other individuals which don’t meet Australian government entry requirements. Australian Border Force officials are now investigating their cases”...
It comes as Djokovic’s lawyers prepared to challenge the ruling in court...
This is despite Serbian President Aleksander Vucic vowing his nation ***(LINK) “will fight” the “maltreatment” of the tennis star...

Oh, yes, they are. There are claims others have managed to get in who shouldn't have. If that is true then people are concerned about that.
PM trailing badly in polls; federal election looming; PM’s favorite media hacks have been merciless about Djokovic - and only Djokovic - whipping up hostility against him. PM thinks he’ll crawl back up in the polls with his intervention to stop Djokoviic. time will tell:
You don't understand Australian politics at all. This is the last thing the PM would have wanted politically. Letting Djokovic in was going to make Daniel Andrews state Labor government look hypocritical and damage them. Now attention has been diverted away from that to the federal Liberal government.
