Yes, the first variant escaped from a Chinese lab and it’s entirely possible that they are still experimenting with it and allowed another variant to escape the lab.
Omicron’s lack of severity does argue against this theory. It is normal for viruses to mutate toward more infectiousness and lower severity. Covid was always going to eventually mutate into the common cold.
