Questions China-sages need to answer, for this particular moment, and looking down the road:
What does China gain by taking over Taiwan?
What is the cost?
Is a greater or lesser cost imposed by waiting?
What are China’s internal political dynamics relative to attacking Taiwan?
What are the external political effects on China’s long-term strategy of dominating first the regional, then the world economy?
Does China’s leadership believe the relative military power balance will tip so far in their favor that Taiwan will capitulate (given no credible help from the US, etc.) without actual warfare?

Why attack? China can just strangle the island nation with a tight sea/air blockade.
If they want Taiwan then they will just blockade and strangle the island nation.

There has been a LOT of divergence though. We had a PRC student living with us. We went to a “chinese” restaurant, which was owned by Taiwanese immigrants.
Our PRC exchange student could not read the signs because the alphabets are so different.
