The FBI is like the Patriot Act. Both have immense power to do good. Both have immense power to do bad. The bad in both far outweigh the good.
Both need to be eliminated in their present form. Tear them down. Rebuild the FBI with very limited powers. Purge the leadership completely and fire all ideologues. Simply kill the patriot act.
Relative to prosecution, those in the FBI that commit crimes should have the full weight of the justice system come down on them and their co conspirators in the Justice Department. The Justice Department needs the same house cleaning.

This. I’ve been saying this for literally decades. Years ago, I didn’t find much support for that sentiment here on FR. I was called names, and more. Today, I note that I didn’t see a single post on this entire thread in support of this evil agency.
I suppose that is progress of a sort.

Why try to salvage that which is now rotten from the head right throught he underlings, when the better alternative is to cancel it and defund the pensions of those now active?

It will just take open trials and public executions of the judiciary, and intelligence heads say 5 deep of the hierarchy to be tried, sentenced and made to become room temperature.
I think you could draw a line on the comprehensive FBI org chart at the level of Field Office Supervisor. Leaving the crime labs intact, eliminate everything above the line. Retain everything below the line. Then create a new box of the fired under the heading, “Subject to Prosecution”.
