An income tax doesn’t tax the rich. It nails the middle class and small biz.

Exactly. High income taxes have little effect upon the rich (cap gains taxes do), as they've already earned their money, which is why they are rich.

Instead, high income taxes keep others from getting rich. One year in the mid-1950s, Elvis Presley paid the most income tax of any American, because when he started making serious money, he was forced to take it as income. The "rich" hardly ever paid those incredibly confiscatory rates from before Reagan.

A part of me thinks that would have made a great North By Northwest moment if the crop dusting plane eventually dropped the banners and made a bee-line for the podium...
