In my family reconciliation was immediate. Some of the Confederates moved North and West to be with Unionist family during Reconstruction and the past was not discussed. It was what it was. But the family was more important.
Heard this from my father who had heard it from his grandparents who were essentially the baby boomers of the civil war (my paternal g-grandmother was born in 1866! Right after dad got home from duty in Vicksburg...). Didn’t mean a lot to me 50 years ago - sounded like ancient history - but now I understand the impact of it.
