That’s never been my experience. Largely the grocery bags seem the same as when they took over in the ‘80s. They were always smaller and weaker than regular paper bags. But, they had handles. So even if you needed 10 instead of 8 bags, at least it was convenient.

if there was a choice, i’d pay, we don’t have a choice...
i started saving bags the day they said they were thinking about making the law
i have two trash bags stuffed full of them and bring them to wally with me as they still have the bag rails on the carousels

i’d be HAPPY to pay a nickle to get rid of these stooopid bags here in ny.Most plastic bags were banashed a year ago in NY.
"As of October 19, 2020, any 'person required to collect tax' must not distribute any plastic carryout bags
to its customers unless such bags are exempt bags as provided for in the Bag Waste Reduction Law."

We have it in our MD county, and I’m sure most of the urban counties here have it.
I pay the 5c but the worst part is having to count them.
When they pulled this, they took away our easy reused small trash bags for cans and cleaning cat litter.

Everyone said we needed to switch to plastic bags to save the environment. Remember that? Paper bags were evil.
Follow the science, they said...

The bags have definitely become thinner and more fragile since the early 80’s. Put too much weight in them and the handles stretch and break.
I used to load them down with 15-20 lbs of cans and other heavy items with no problem. Now, 3 items per bag is it.

I buy them. When we go to PA, we stock up on them. I “reuse” the damn things as little trash liners and cat litter mess collection.

I was a teen when they came out and just don’t recall most ever being tough. We used to shop every week as a family and I worked down a shopping center from one so picked them up plenty after working.
That’s grocery proper. it varies much more with other store types, like WalMart or dollar stores or convenience stores. I find the actual grocery stores very consistent in size and strength, even over the decades.
Maybe you had better groceries.

Oh sorry if I wasn’t clear.
I buy them here in MD. I don’t care, I need them, but still try to minimize how many.
In PA they are still free.
Also interesting is that our MD Weis (PA outfit) just gave up the old plastic altogether and instead sells big plastic reinforced handled bags for 10c! Nice bags, but they can’t be used in our little cans and a waste for cat litter. So, I go to that store less now.

Funny is that now they know people love the plastic if only for the handles.
So, now they make paper bags more expensive by stapling separate handles onto them. Which also makes them tougher to easily recycle.

LOL
I know I clarified but here’s the simple version: head for the border into PA when you need more bags! NOT MD!

Trees are burned up—so they cannot make paper bags.
