My flag outside my home hangs upside down....
Buchanan has a highly distorted view of history. And he doesn’t know much about Lincoln’s views on slavery. All he would have had to do was read the Lincoln Douglas debates.
Even so, I was taught in high school many years ago, when they actually taught history, that the war grew out of regional economic conflicts which included the fight to prevent the expansion of slavery, with its concomitant control of Congress in the hands of Southern interests.
Once hostilities commenced, the preservation of the Union became paramount, as both sides were acutely aware of the potential for involvement of European powers. Both sides sought allies, but each probably realized that that would mean the end of the American
experiment.
Horse hockey. That is laughable and a myth. The USA, sans the South, was still a young powerful nation expanding and building cross country railroads. The most powerful army in the world during the early 1860's was the US Army. The CS Army was the second most powerful. If you could have magically transported either army to Europe they could have conquered all of it.
Most of the current danger is from within.
