That is not surprising. Why wouldn't thousands of pro-Taliban Afghans simply go to the airport and stand on the runways. What better way to block the US? It is non-violent, and forces the US to massacre civilians to re-open the airport.
There are millions of Afghans who support the Taliban, and just yesterday thousands of prisoners were freed by the Taliban and started walking towards the airport.
The Taliban doesn't need to attack the US, just fill the airport with civilian supporters, which they probably already did.

This is just heartbreaking. What a nightmare.
This is exactly what happened during the fall of Saigon. Then a few years later came the boat people, many of whom drowned at sea.
