Is it a Godfather? Patton? Hell Forrest Gump?

Well, you are setting the bar pretty high, but there are several movies on my list that I'd rewatch before any of those three -- perhaps because I've rewatched Godfather, Patton and Forrest Gump enough times in past years, long before streaming tv came along, to basically have them memorized.

Godfather II and III, by the way, don't do anything for me. I'm becoming sequel intolerant in my old age.

At this point, I will rarely rewatch an entire movie more than once or twice, if that. I have a pretty retentive memory, and I don't need to sit through long expositions of a story I already know. What I will do, however, is skip through a movie and rewatch the great scenes. That's where the magic of movies is found, and streamed movies are perfect for this. Or I'll break them up and rewatch over two or three evenings, the way I'd reread a good book.

Movies are like poetry. We read poetry for the perfect line, the line of such crystalline clarity and beauty that it leaves us stunned. The problem is that one has to read through so much filler to get to the great lines scattered about. The overburden to ore ratio is too high.

That's why I've always thought the best book of poetry is Bartlett's Famous Quotations. But to appreciate the great line in Bartlett's, one does need to have read the poem at least once for context. For most poems, once is enough, but the great line or verse can be recalled with pleasure innumerable times. Great scenes in movies are like that.

“The White House is racist! Change the name, now!”

I hate all this woke PC garbage, turns me off and makes me hate Hollywood types even more.

Agreed. Chernobyl was excellent. Check out Dear Comrades!, which is a Russian film. I’m not sure where it’s streaming now, but it’s worth a watch.

This is why I look for older DVDs at thrift stores.

Some in my family keep telling me that CDs and DVDs are on their way out. You can just stream everything.

My retort was only if they carry it. If they don’t carry it, you’re out of luck.

I can watch my DVD anytime I want, unadulterated by the left.

Let’s have more suggestions from more people. What are some GOOD movies you’ve seen in the last couple of years?

We've gravitated to foreign films, mostly Asian like Korean and Japanese. You won't see hardly any wokeness there. Some have English dubbing, but many are subtitled in English. We don't mind, and find a lot of good content, mostly on Netflix. The plus side is not seeing token blacks and gays thrust into the story for wokeness effect. They do have occasional white actors, but mostly as part of the story line (interpreters, teachers, relations overseas, etc.). Very refreshing not to see the filth from Hollywood.

Hollywood is past corrupt. The bosses there are also in CYA mode expecting that the Revolution has won and they don’t want to be shot when the inevitable comes around.

... they wouldn’t know a good movie if it kicked them in the shins.
Your self-righteous arrogance has just negated everything else you said before Mr. Hollywood apologist.

Get over yourself. I was reacting to the people howling that Hollywood hasn’t made a good movie in 20 years. Nonsense. We agree that “Hollywood” has a lot of problems. The major studios are run by cowards terrified by twitter mobs, and many of the executives are ideologically and morally corrupt themselves. But that said, a lot of good movies are still being made. Most movies do NOT involve nudity and explicit sex scenes. Most movies do NOT involve woke hysterics. There are a lot of people in the film industry who want to make honest movies, and movies like the ones I’ve listed are quite conservative in perspective and tone, whatever the personal politics of the filmmakers. This is because truth will out if filmmakers tell honest stories, and many filmmakers want to do precisely this. People who don’t understand this simply don’t know what they are talking about.

How many of the movies that I suggested have you actually seen? If you’ve not seen them, that’s ok. The fact that most of these movies were not highly publicized is part of the problem. Watch a few trailers and read a few reviews before you overreact.

My point is simply that we should support the good films when we find them. Mindless howling that there are no good films is ignorant and counterproductive.

I used to think profits mattered to Hollywood and the media, but then I realized with the massive amounts of money the Chinese are capable of throwing around to bribe whom they need to, profit is not the primary motivation behind the media and Hollywood. Being mouthpieces for China is far more profitable than any advertisers they could hope to lure. Think about it, the Chinese can throw around 100’s of billions, or even trillions, whereas when we talk of a mega-hit movie it’s measured in a 100 million or so.....chump change to the Chinese.

I’ve gotten into foreign films. A lot of good ones coming out of Korea.

Parasite was an excellent film.

Bedevilled (2010) is agonizing to watch, and stays with you for months afterwards.

Sweet and Sour is another good one with a kicker of an ending.

Crash Landing On You is a great series (stick past the first episode, it is worth it)

What Is Wrong With Secretary Kim is a funny rom-com

Indian films are also highly entertaining.

Kaabil with Hrithik Roshan is an outstanding revenge film

Band Baaja Baarat with Ranveer Signh is a great rom-com

Shah Ru Khan has several amazing films.

Paxman with Ashkay Kumar is a fictionalized account of an Indian entrepreneur who was cast out of his home town, ridiculed, and lost almost everything because he tried to provide a healthy alternative for his wife and family members. Now, he is a famous inventor and humanitarian.

There is good cinema out there. Most of it is not coming from Hollywood.

Declining ratings? No problem. They’ll blame the internet and streaming services, racism, and Trump. Then carry on as usual.

They'll just market even more to China than they do now.

All according to the plan.

From the communist goals:

21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”

23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as “normal, natural, and healthy.”

Any questions? Find and read a copy of the rest of the goals. Explains everything...
