Even before the assassination, Haiti had grown increasingly unstable and disgruntled under Moïse. The president ruled by decree for more than two years after the country failed to hold elections and the opposition demanded he step down in recent months.

Makes you wonder what will happen in America if we don't have fraud free elections. That is the equivalent to not holding elections.

I am reminded of flying from Florida to the Dominican Republic in first class. The guy seated next to me told me that he went to the DR often, which has 2/3 of the island of Hispaniola, the other 1/3 being Haiti. He told me to look out the window and I could see the border between the DR and Haiti; I noted that one part of the island looked barren and all of a sudden there was a clear line going down it where all turned green to the east for most of the island. He told me that was the border - the Haitians cut down all trees for firewood while the DRs were preservationists. So the Haitians ended up with no wood products, no shade, and a constant threat of not only soil erosion but landslides.

They are already blaming America saying the perp had an "AMERICAN ENGLISH" Spanish accent. At least that's what soy boy toni dikopil on cbs this morning said.

Dominicans use firewood but the Haitians use charcoal. Cultures that use charcoal as their primary energy source utterly devastate their environments. Haitians, Arabs, Somalis, Ethiopians, North Africans, etc. all use charcoal and all have devastated their forests and watersheds.

A bit O/T, but you reminded me of an experience from several years ago. On a flight home to DFW from Atlanta, I was seated next to a man from Alameda, CA. He had a low opinion of Texas and Texans, until we were near the airport.

He remarked, "you have quite a few lakes here." I told him there was only one natural lake of any size, Lake Caddo...the rest are manmade. Texans are smarter as you think."

That's really not true. Until the Duvalier regime, Haiti was just as forested as the Dominican side. The Dulaviers sold all the forests to Japanese factories to make cheap furniture for export to the west. That caused the deforestation. Efforts have been made to replant trees but all the good soil has eroded away. [The Duvaliers would probably still be in power today if it weren't for Reagan, who forced the regime out in the 80s.]

You are right about the stark contrast between the two countries when you fly in. It's very sad.

It's easy to look down on the Haitian people but almost all of the country's problems have been created by corrupt leaders controlled by outside interests. [It's not a coincidence that the Clinton Foundation is "working" in Haiti. Nothing new.]

I’ve seen that picture. It’s a shame because Haiti doesn’t have to be that way. Problem goes back to being a French colony instead of British.
