“I’m the same way, only it’s more like 1590”

1590? Do you mean 1950?

No, 1590 is right. Music never got better, as far as I'm concerned. It got a lot louder and more complicated after that, before getting even louder and more chaotic in our own time.

Well, I like classical music just fine but not more than the 1940’s which I also like but not more than the 1950’s thru early 1964 which I like best.

What I like about music and what determines the degree of caring for it is the memories it evokes. Since I’m a kid of the 1950’s my first memories of listening to music start in the late 40’s.

Like you I am not and never was a fan of loud rock and always enjoyed the ballads of R&R along with the pop artists of the time such as Dean Martin, Sinatra, Sammy Davis and the like.

Thanks for the links - saved me a search!

His voice is still instantly recognizable.

I just finished “Why Are You on facebook”. At 4:55 it’s a bit longwinded but it asks pricelessly appropriate questions.

Van is a musical genius...a real one. I’m curious about the right-wing sentiments on this album. His song “Western Man” is right-on.

In any case, it’s quite a turnaround from his mocking and joking about Donald Trump running for president when I saw Van in concert in 2016.

Mille Regretz by Josquin des Prés. I also love the arrangement for vihuela de mano for that song, by Luis de Narvaez. For purely instrumental music, once again by Narvaez, the six variations of O Gloriosa Domina. Beautiful music, though I'll admit it's not accessible to everyone.

That's one of the main reasons why we have music. Another is that, like all art, it's a means of communicating abstract thoughts which are too complex to relay by means of simple narration. I've always said that, to the extent a work of art can invoke in the mind of a beholder the same thoughts and feelings experienced by its creator, it is successful art. Taste is another matter.

I agree it is a means of communicating but the part about it communicating abstract thoughts? Most pop music as I referred to it from the late 40's thru the 50's was pretty straight forward and even the original R&R was anything but complex. Bill Haley, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, The Platters, Connie Francis, Lou Christie and the like were anything but complex in the arrangements they offered. The very epitome of simplicity (not complex) is this piece from Nilsson from his hit 1972 album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJPrRaXU4U0 and this one from the same album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJI8OCupEPE Warning-profanity

And feelings; emotions, and the like. Abstractions. If it doesn't do that, or doesn't attempt to do it, it's not art, so far as I'm concerned.

He’s really angry about the way the government have shut down all entertainment venues and not offered any compensation to anyone in those industries, unlike other business.

Plus he thinks it’s all based on bullshit....he can afford to speak out when most are too scared and that also really pisses him off...the bullying.

I cannot disagree with your opinions as you are certainly entitled to them but aren’t these things subjective? I may here a song from say the 1950’s and because of the particular memories it evokes in me I will have a strong emotional response. You may here the exact same music and it has little or no meaning for you.

Like I said, music is great if you like it and not if you don’t.

Yes, as are many things that are too important not to analyze, such as belief in God.

Here is the oldest song in the world. I hope you enjoy it.
Of note is that it was discovered in the 1950’s???
