The Apple silicon M1 chip uses 5nm architecture, and a 4nm is coming. If Intel finally masters their 10 nm, the 5 nm stuff will be one fourth the density. Even this 7 nm will be double compared with 10 nm.

These corporations have no allegiance this country. Zero zip, none.

Profits regardless of consequences.

If they licensed the process from Global Foundries, it will never work.
TSMC, Samsung and Intel are the only players and Intel has yet to prove they can do it.

7nm is not for the faint of heart, dreamers or those without spare multi billions lying around.

I’m thinking it was Global Foundries.

Not so sure about that.. I have read a few stories, within the last couple of months, that all of the good NVidia cards are being sold (to the miners) faster than the public can get their hands on one (for gaming).
This is the reason I went ahead and purchased an RTX (instead of GTX) 2060 at the beginning of this year.

It’s a shame, this 3xxx is basically a skipped gaming generation. By the time the 4xxx’s are out, they 3k’s will be worthless for gaming.

So true.. The card I am running now is the first one that can actually run Crysis (a 2007 game) maxed out on Ultra. Crysis is a VERY demanding game :P

Technology is jumping ahead so fast, I can't imagine where it will be in the next few years (can't even say 'a decade' anymore).

(Remember, about 15-20 years ago, they claimed that we hit a dead end on technology, "because there wasn't anything else to improve", or something like that. --Wayne's World: "Shaw, and monkeys'll fly out of my butt"--)

I have been semi-shopping for a new video card for six months now.
It is ridiculous...

Ray Tracing was a big leap, in the 20x0 and then 4k with the 30x0. 8k is coming, but probably not as big of a deal. Stuff like raytracing though is a huge leap. I have my 1070/1080. The do everything well besides raytracing. The 20x0’s can do it, but just barely.

I’m probably going to hold out on my 10xx until 40xx or later, since that’s when the games/multimedia will really start to embrace it all.

The raytracing right now is a touch and go. We/they are just seeing whether or not it will take off. I had a choice between the GTX 1060 and the RTX 2060. The RTX was cheaper and came with 2Gb less of RAM. BUT.. the 6 Gb of RAM, along with the RTX is supposed to overpower the GTX (I did research about 20 benchmarks compairing them, and 90% of the time, the RTX DID outperform the 1060 (and in some cases, the 1070).

But, it is still up ion the air :/

That’s what I’m worried about, if Raytracing will be that much of an upgrade. I have my 1080/1070’s, and they’re still really fast. MS Flight Sim 2020 works, but it sure looks better with Raytracing I’d say, from the vids I’ve seen.

To clarify: they are not used for mining bitcoin . OTOH graphics cards are currently used to mine ethereum. That's because they supprt the high memory bandwidth needed for ethereum. Bitcoin doesn't need high memory BW just fast SHA256 hashing. No GPU comes close to the custom hardware used for SHA256. So no GPUs are used for bitcoin or bitcoin clones.

However, ethereum is going to switch to proof-of-stake so all those graphics cards will no longer be useful. There are clones of ethereum that require high memory BW (and clones of bitcoin that require bitcoin HW). But those clones are not nearly as popular and won't create as high a demand.

If you can take a profit on your graphics card, I would do it before the switch-over to PoS.

TI just built a new parking garage and put in some more chemical tanks at their fab in Richardson, but I didn’t notice any expansion of the factory space.

What US company gave the CCP the technology to develop this chip in return for using china’s slave labor pool to reduce their production cost for the chips they were making at the time of the technology transfer?

Good question - then again the transfer might have been the usual outright theft...
