Okay, this is a weird one. Woldesenbet, one word, is Ethiopian, and most of the men with that name in the US are in some way involved with medicine. A lot of M.D.s.
However, if you hyphenate the name into Wolde-senbet, the name is exclusively Swedish.
The decedent is Ethiopian.
Yet another government import?
“I saw more than one retirement of an E-4 who had a clean record and never lost even one stripe.”
I don’t know when you got out but high year tenure rules will not normally allow an E-4 to retire. I almost hit HYT for E-5 (long story). I’ve been retired for over 20 years.
E-1 to E-2 4
May not reenlist or extend unless HYT is granted by
BUPERS-32.
E-3 6
E-3 who “Passed Not Advanced” a Navy-wide advancement
exam prior to March 2012 (cycle 215) retain HYT gate of
8 years.
E-4 10
E-5 16
E-6 22
E-7 24
E-8 26
E-9 30
You’re right. I was thinking of a 4 striper. E-4 was HYT at 10 years. E-5 and E-6 was HYT at 20 I think.
Navy takes old people:
To join the Navy, you must:
Be a U.S. citizen; or Legal Permanent Resident (Enlisted)
Be between the ages of 17 and 39 to enlist or be between 19 and 42 to become an Officer*
Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent (Enlisted) or have a four-year degree from an accredited university (Officer)
I remember the Ethiopians from “We Are The World”... does that count?
Might?
That was a great deal. I was in the AF from 60-64 so those options weren’t there for me obviously and probably were not available back then in the Navy.
I made MM1 (E-6) in less than 5 years. Helps I was in the Nuclear field.

Being a nuke was definitely an advantage. I made ET2 pretty quick because all you had to do at that time for ET advancement was spell your name right but stuck there for a llllllooooonnnngggg time.
