The military are absolutely the bad guys, apart from anything else. They’ve murdered hundreds of thousands of civilians over the years, quite apart from the rapes, maiming from indiscriminate land mines and shelling and so forth. When my organization collected clothing for children there in IDP camps we sorted out all the colorful clothing - the Tatamadaw (government) soldiers will shoot at the kids in the jungle while on patrol.
(Apparently no one around here has ever watched the Rambo movie set there; while I don’t ordinarily cite Hollywood depictions, in this case the Rambo movie is basically an intensified version of the truth in how the military runs things over there. Sylvester Stallone was deeply moved by what he learned filming the movie, and I am hearing he may make a public statement soon. That’s one of the very rare times I’d look forward to a statement from a Hollywood type.)
I don’t know the fine details of the civilian government; it’s largely developed on a platform of pulling power away from the military junta, which always retained enough power through the “democratic” period to ensure the generals would never face a firing squad for war crimes as they should. The whole “election fraud” farce (the military’s proxies lost overwhelmingly) was just an excuse to grab back power before they lost too much influence. (As indicated by the lame charges they brought up against the civilian leadership, like owning a couple walkie-talkies.)
The fact that the protestors have been burning and destroying Chinese owned factories gives an indication of the frustration the general population feels towards the military and its Chinese handlers. (Myanmar is the 2nd largest buyer of Chinese military hardware, and I’ve been hearing from internal sources that Chinese have been flying in at night and have an increasing presence with junta operations.)
When Oliver North and the NRA wanted to do a series on “American Heroes,” Dave Eubank (the author of this article) was the first on their list. Their documentary and the movie Free Burma Rangers are gripping and can help orient people on Myanmar (as well as featuring intense coverage of FBR ops in the battle for Mosul.)

Why do people keep bring up Soros on this subject? I get that there is a “Satan is the incarnation of George Soros” crowd, but trying to interpret every event in the world based on a fixation with one billionaire (out of hundreds) is bizarre. I’m sure I disagree with him wildly in his politics, but I’m not going to hop into bed with communists and genocidal maniacs just to avoid any hint of agreement with him.

For such a small planet , sometimes all ya have to do is follow the money if ya can.
