Your advice to stay local is well taken. There are indeed many shiney objects going about... and I mostly agree with you. However, it's my contention that the shiney objects paint an overall picture that is now fuzzy, but worth at least, as I said, raised eyebrows for future more-reasoned digestion. Till that day, I believe it is prudent to be aware of the crazy, so that at some more sane time we have an awareness of how things unfolded.
At some point society will move from shiney objects to real news and a semblance of reality again. FR's by definition are politically astute, and will eventually want to put the puzzle together.
