Infectious Disease - prion disease (brain malfunction)- New Brunswick, Canada
While the disease has infected only about 25 victims thusfar, it warrants medical attention and concern for possible spread.
The cause remains unknown.

jerod :"Three of the deaths are people who had cataract surgery... Oddly enough."

Oddly enough is true; also in the case of many viral diseases we are finding mucous membranes as reservoirs of viral infection,
and many people forget that the eyes are just one of several 'privileged places' which happen to be mucous membranes.
The fact that the progressive disease symptoms happen to be related to other prion diseases, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (in common vernacular:"Mad Cow disease").
"..the disease is not genetic and could be contracted from water, food or air..."

"Scientists are currently looking into the possibility that this is a new variant of a prion disease — or a new disease entirely."

"These are patients who have clinical features that correspond to prion diseases, of which Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is one,"
but show no evidence of having Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or any other form of prion disease.."

At present the disease seems to remain in the northeast and southeast regions of the Acadian peninsula of New Brunswick, generally near Moncton, Ca.
The source of this recent newly identified disease remains unknown.

Correction : the number count of victims is 40, not approximately 25 as I listed in my comment.

"in 2019, 11 additional cases were discovered, 24 more cases in 2020 and another six cases in 2021. Five people have died."

It doesn't sound like CJD to me. My brother in law died from CJD a number of years ago. He self diagnosed that he had a problem in December, and died the next March. It is always fatal, and happens quickly.

Look at the operating suits and tools used.

I would bet you have one person with CVD, and it contaminated the whole thing.

Similar to how it spread in England with dental work.

Big question is how many other people went through the same surgery with no ill effects? It seems some are more resistant to prions than others. Just like CWD was supposed to destroy the deer population, and in some areas the numbers are recovering.

A first case was diagnosed in 2015, according to the memo. Three years later, in 2019, 11 additional cases were discovered, 24 more cases in 2020 and another six cases in 2021. Five people have died.

But this disease is limited to the Acadia Peninsula. So far anyway.

I suspect caribou are far western Canada and Alaska. My question is, do they have elk? I remember seeing something about Mad Cow disease in upper mid-west or western US elk. That business about cataract and related surgery is scary. Makes me glad I have been able to improve my cataracts about 80% with targeted nutritional supplements.
