Lincoln didn't get a majority in 1860, he got a small plurality, and with luck not unlike Trump in 2016, a majority of the electoral vote. He wasn't even sure he would get a majority in 1864 and appointed a Tennessee Democrat (albeit Union Loyalist) to the ticket to help cement a majority.

He did this in spades, not only with the election outcome, but the favorable outcome of the war and perhaps, most importantly, his tragic assassination.

The GOP won the next two national elections by convincing margins, but the two after that just barely. But it became a viable party thereafter and won five of the next seven national elections.

The sole exception was the same guy (Grover Cleveland) who went on to be a fairly decent president.
