He also assisted in setting up on-the-job training for the enlisted men being instructed in nuclear propulsion for the USS Seawolf (SSN575).
9 OCT 1953—Honorably discharged at Headquarters, 3rd Naval District. Discharge was at Carter’s request. Total service: 7 years, 4 months, 8 days
10 OCT 1953—Appointed to US Naval Reserve and placed on inactive duty.
7 DEC 1961—Transferred to retired reserve with rank of Lieutenant at his own request, but without pay and allowances in accordance with Title X, U.S.C. section 1376 (a).

James E Carter’s Naval career was a little different than a swift boat commander or an aviator who crashed three aircraft and only kept his wings because his daddy was an admiral.

They do not let dummies become first officers on NUCLEAR SUBMARINES.

What else could he do? It was a fiasco from the day it was first concocted, Have you ever read about the logistics of that raid? They were going to take the hostages out BY BUS!!!! It was an insane plan from the very start. It was overly dependent on chance and circumstance, and any military tactician worth his salt will say that is a no-no.
