No senator or VP (or both) has ever defeated a sitting potus, and only one senator/VP (VP isn’t an executive position but rather political heir of the president) ever defeated a governor (in 1920).And winning presidents are shooting stars - Carter, Clinton, W Bush, Obama, Trump - rather than old war horses.
VP’s readily with their party’s presidential nomination, but since the 12th Amendment only Andrew Jackson and Ronald Reagan have seen their sitting VP elected POTUS. So Pence looks like our POTUS nominee in ’24, and you might think he’d have trouble in the general election. Maybe so - but VP Pence is also former Governor Pence, so there’s that . . .
