I can't speak to his expertise in virology other than his earlier imbroglio over the AIDs virus in which he claimed it was the US that discovered the virus. The Nobel Prize committee settled that issue when they awarded the prize to the French.
In terms of epidemiology, I've been stunned by the totally false claims of some of the epidemiologists. I wouldn't expect Fauci to have an understanding of statistics but an epidemiologist darn well should. Maybe some of their comments were mis-reported by the journalists.
