I think the Dems use a chart with the Left on one side and the right on the other.
So, the extreme end of the Left is Communism and Socialism, and the other end is Fascism.
I think there was a time I thought of it in those terms too, but...it makes no sense when you think about it.
But that's putting your data points on the chart before you even put labels/units on your axis. You're right, it makes no sense. If Commies/Socialists are on the left, and Fascists are the right, where would a Monarchist fit in between? Anarchists? Corporatocracy? Oligarchy? Theocracy? Democracy or Republic? Many of these types of government are outside the bounds of a line with Commie/Fascist endpoints.
The John Birch Society actually has a really good video that explains the Left-Right scale of different government structures.
