My old stomping grounds. The Salvation Army has a large training school, also Avon has a YYUUGGE plant there. Let's see if the left calls for boycotts targeted at them. Amazingly the son of il Sfaccim, Killing Fields Cuomo didn't speak out against the people who gathered for this event.

Wasn’t there a place called the Red Apple Rest in Suffern? I remember my parents taking me there after apple picking at Maskers apple orchard.

Yes, we stopped there often when I was a kid It was also a biker hangout, just before they closed. It's still standing, but just barely. About 7 years ago some investors from the UK considered buying the property and renovating it but it needs asbestos abating and sadly the building may be too far gone. Another childhood memory gone 🙁

The Red Apole was located further north, on Rt17 between Tuxedo and Harriman.

Yup. a big Japanese restaurant off Rt. 17, railroad, hospital, a Jackson Whites enclave complete with shotguns and banjo.

Oh, yeah, it was a Benihana. Originally it was the Motel on the Mountain which opened just as the NY Thruway was completed around 1958. When the family sold it in 1977, it became a gay bar. Interestingly, some of those “Jackson Whites” a mixture of Caucasian, Native and African heritages, technically they’re tri racial, whom my wife’s family is distantly related to protested, carrying signs saying “we got a Stag Hill near, don’t need a FAG Hill here!”

Another small historic tidbit, the Triumph dog food plant, alongside the RR tracks in Hillburn made lots of C Rations during WW2. I stumbled across one unopened can in of all places an old tobacco warehouse in Savannah, GA converted into an antiques mall.

Of the three clusters of Jackson Whites, the Hillburn one is the most assimilated; the Mahwah and Ringwood ones are bizarre.

That whole area kind of fell by the wayside when the Thruway came through; there is a LOT of history there (mostly related to iron mining). Between Suffern and Sloatsburg used to be Sterlington - nothing left there now.

I’m surprised the condition of the building even mattered; you’re buying the location (and I assume building a modern building there). Doesn’t seem very fitting for any year-round business as it was originally built.

Why my daughter was married the wedding party stayed at the Holiday Inn in Suffern. That’s about all I know about Suffern.
