We have already been paying for Japan to be our ally. Our bases, large number of our troops there, etc. Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Yokota Air Force Base in Fussa, Misawa Air Force Base in Misawa, Camp Zama Army Base in Zama, Torii Station Army Base in Okinawa, etc. among many other installations (couple of dozen?). As for their constitution, it was written by Gen. MacArthur and the U.S.A. had a heavy influence on it and can influence the Japanese government to modify it.
Trump has been pressuring Japan to pay us more for having our troops there. Turnabout is fair play. If we want Japan to be our proxy then they should expect to get paid. How much is it worth to us?
As for their constitution, it was written by Gen. MacArthur and the U.S.A. had a heavy influence on it and can influence the Japanese government to modify it.
Would you be good with us amending our Constitution if Japan wanted us to?
Not me personally, I'm against that, but we have Mexico and other countries lobbying us to change ours. Probably some of your neighbors and friends want that. As for Japan, there are Japanese nationals who would like to make changes to their constitution - they've already bent the rules regarding having offensive capabilities while calling it self-defense forces.
So why should Japan be thrilled with us pressuring them to change their constitution?

Then let them do it. They don't need us butting in.
Who says we're butting in? You? They're getting enough grief from China, for them to pressure their own government to man up.
We have no money, blood, or supplies.
Our own country is breaking apart.
Sorry. We have issues much greater than fighting a land war in Asia.
