I just got back from Costco and wear the mask they gave me the last time I was there. However before I went I got a whole bunch of holes in it to drastically increase the amount of air I can inhale and exhale. It was very comfortable and nobody said a word.

well that is in part what the person will breath in again, since the fabric of the mask hinders intake of other oxygen to various degree. the longer you wear a mask the more exhaled air/some new air you will breathe. it’s not a healthy thing to do for hours. so what if medical and other professions do it routinely prior to cover 19, it doesn’t make it healthy., especially for the non sick, or those sick with other ailments to have some degree of oxygen deficit.

“A third student, wearing a standard surgical mask, inserted the device and it beeped immediately with a 17.6 oxygen level reading.”

Bull Hockey. Maybe if the edges of the mask are glued to your face!

Most of the O2 inlet when you are wearing a surgical mask is through the sides. The paper masks is worn to stop your moist droplets of germs from getting to the patient.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) “considers any atmosphere with an oxygen level below 19.5 percent to be oxygen-deficient and immediately dangerous to life or health.”

WRONG (here we go again!)

My work spends thousands of dollars on equipment for remove aerosoled liquids from shop air. I’m sure a few boxes of crappy paper chinese masks would be much cheaper, and just as effective!

Wearing my mask all day. Not dead, sick, unconscious or short of breath. Feeling just fine, in fact.

YMMV.

The device immediately began beeping

Hey, maybe I could get a job as an oxygen reader. I don't immediately begin beeping, but I do immediately begin cussin', which is just as good warning-wise.

If the mask hinders the flow of gasses it should be great for hindering the flow of the larger virus particles?

Atmospheric O2 21%

Human exhalation CO2 4%

Human exhalation O2 17%

There isn’t enough room in the mask for you to be rebreathing much exhalation. Average tidal volume is 500 cc, the surgical mask holds holds maybe 20. You are breathing air through and around the mask.

Human exhalation CO2 4%

Atmospheric CO2 percentage = 0.04%

Well, that’s only 100 times more concentrated. Why would that be a problem? /sarc

Use an optical oximeter that measures blood oxygenation. You can get one from Walgreens for $50.

Thanks for posting this. People need to be warned. A few weeks ago I was almost suffocated for foolishly keeping my mask on while carrying a heavy box up some stairs. Never gasped that violently in my life

If you’re breathing air “around” the mask, you’re exhaling air “around” the mask.

And if there are no “virus particles,” it does nothing.

no doubt wearing masks all the time has some big downsides...

but a better experiment would have been to place the gizmo under his shirt first to see how it reacted....
