A longtime UCLA professor has been placed on leave after facing backlash over his response to a student’s request to postpone the final exam for African American students

The biggest impediment to those African American students learning something at UCLA is the UCLA administrators who decided to place this professor on leave.

Sad to say, I attended UCLA. Happy to say it was back when the school was good.

“THE KILLING FIELDS”
We first saw the film in 1987. It’s been stuck in my alleged brain since and I wanted to see it again...especially now!
It can be seen at the link below. I downloaded it and added it to my collection. If you have never seen it, I urge you to do so.
As you watch, the most dangerous words in ANY language may run thru your head. Then ask if you ever thought we’d see gangs of little communists running through city streets destroying property and assaulting citizens as some of them took control of 6 square blocks of Seattle while issuing demands to the local government?
Also note how the tyrant employs the nation’s youth. Look familiar??
Oh yes: The most dangerous words?
WHY THAT COULD NEVER HAPPEN HERE!

ah the scent of anti-Semitism is in the air, again, at UCLA.

Welcome to the Third Reich’s new American branch, UCLA.

USC vs UCLA...I think administrators at both schools are obsessed with political correctness...
But, the area around UCLA is great...Unlike the area around USC...

Alumni need to stop supporting their schools. That includes the athletics. Let the damn places dry up. College was fun for us, and most of us have great memories of it, but leave it at that. Screw em.

A simple “no” would have been enough. Thank you for your email, but no the final exam will not be postponed.

Bingo. That is probably the smartest way for faculty to proceed going forward. Just state their position and/or say the request is contrary to the syllabus without getting cute or preachy.

If the student won’t let it go, just punt. Tell them to talk to the Dept Chair or Dean if they think they are being treated unfairly. Don’t give them ammo. Also, any faculty with an active Twitter account needs to have their head examined.

Apparently Klein has taught at UCLA for 39 years. So I am guessing he can retire anytime he wants to. He is in a good position to fight this.

While it is more self-preserving to issue a blanket “no” without citing the reason why, it runs counter to the nature of an actual teacher (which it appears this man is). It may be politically expedient, but it does not help provide context for the way adults are supposed to arrive at their conclusions.

The students desperately need such help in figuring out HOW to think. This man is caught in a cross fire because he seems dedicated to helping them figure this out.

I don’t entirely disagree with you. Probably even 5 years ago this professor could have sent that email without any controversy. Unfortunately, we are where we are and people need to adapt. In my 38 years in the workforce, I’ve learned quite a few lessons. One lesson is to pick your battles carefully. Another is don’t be overly cute or sarcastic. There is a smart way to do things and a not-so-smart way. Klein chose the not-so-smart way.

That being said, I think UCLA is going overboard here. If their fire Klein, he can probably sue and get a nice settlement. He is probably at retirement age right now, so a nice way of saying FU right back at ‘em on the way out.

He may have led with a simple no, and was asked for an explanation, along with a threat to take it higher up.
