I am neither a Marine nor served in Iraq, but I read an excellent book “No True Glory” about the battle for Fallujah. (I read the book many years ago, so this is all from memory)
The Marines were held up by a bunch of insurgents occupying a minaret in a mosque, and were firing weapons from behind the walled compound of the mosque.
They had apparently been stuck there and delayed for some time (knew they would be crucified if they fired on a mosque) when Mattis was driven up in a humvee and he jumped out and asked what was going on.
The Marines explained the situation, and without hesitation Mattis said (I have to paraphrase because I don’t remember exactly) “Get a tank up here. Put a round in that minaret. Call in some air support and put a few MK-82 into that courtyard.
They took out the minaret, and a few minutes later, a few bombs landed in the courtyard, with visible body parts and weapons flying high in the air while the Marines hooted and hollered like they were at a concert.
Point was, he didn’t care about the blowback, and was direct and to the point and the Marines loved it.
That was what I based my opinion of him on, so when Trump named him SecDef, I was for it.
Well, I was wrong, and realized it soon enough when Mattis said he was all for letting open homosexuals serve in the military, and was all on board with transsexuals serving and dragged his feet when Trump directed him to change that policy.
I was wrong, and I sure hated it, because I had high hopes.

Why did Trump hire him?To destroy the aspirations of ISIS.
They wanted to re-establish the Levant. They were unsuccessful.

Sounds like the deep state is afraid President Trump will federalize the National Guard. And so that is exactly what President Trump should do.
Then they should be placed to protect federal buildings, sites and the locals in the area especially minority areas.
President Trump needs to go in a talk softly and carry a big stick mode and deliver action to these people. He is not gong to be able to out tweet or out speak them.
All the leaders need to be found and rounded up fast and then the guard needs to leave as quickly as they came.
If he waits they will continue these protests for months gaining sympathy through the media outlets continued propaganda
You said it. I have seen enough of Trump to the point I now have near blind faith in his judgment. Mattis is a Deep State 'political general' and highly overrated like Trump said and I am glad Trump booted him out. I mean what an ingrate. Trump even had the law changed so he could have Mattis appointed and Mantis took that to mean he was important enough to be actually making policy. When he found out he wasn't, he threw a hissy fit and now he goes to the media to b*** about Trump. Just like the rest of the people Trump fired. Classless.

Agreed, Mattis began tearing down the military from within by supporting Trans, homosexuals and woman in front line combat MOS. Glad to see him gone.
Yes, recognize swamp inheritance. Vetting would have helped uncover this years ago. Doing nothing is not the answer.
He took who he could get.
He came in without his own team of insiders, as he came from the outside.
In many ways he was unprepared for the institutional warfare it turned out that he was required to wage in order to implement what amounted to an overturn of established policy.
He depended on the Republican establishment to arrange most appointments, and these were their men. The wrong men, in so many cases. He is still almost entirely dependent on that establishment for most things, including judicial appointments.
No, Trump fights unlike both bushes.
As a citizen, it is difficult to come to any kind of conclusion about the people that are appointed or hired in most cases. We can only go on what we know.
At best, it is a shallow decision sometimes that enables us to support an appointment, because sometimes...you just can’t tell.
I began to have a bad feeling when month after month after Trump said he was going to roll back transgender policy, and...nothing was forthcoming from the DOD.
I think everybody should be fired at least once. Just to get the feeling.
It doesn’t bug me that much anymore. Some of these people would take that as the end of the world and get all offended.
Mattis knew what the President wanted when he accepted Secretary of Defense, then tried to ignore him, especially on getting out of Syria. When Trump acted on his own to withdraw troops from Syria, Mattis's days were numbered.
The President is an optimist, he probably sees people in a better light than he should until they prove him wrong.
think Mattis was a great commander and Commandant of Marines.
But when his job had more political responsibilities, he clearly got in over his head.
If he now sticks his head up to engage in political sniping at Trump, turnabout is fair play.
