We live in an age during which information is readily available on any topic. That means we don't have ‘elite keepers of the knowledge’, like when only people with money and connections went to college. They've tried to keep that alive, however, by using university/college pedigree as a determinant of who is ‘elite’ (e.g. all of our Supreme Court Justices went to either Harvard or Yale law schools, as did the Clintons and Obama).
That said, the delusion of Ivy superiority is not universally accepted anymore, and is going away, as it should. Nonetheless, as it stands currently, pedigree still empowers, and has guaranteed us the worst in leadership for decade upon decade.

Bernadine Dohrn and her “husband”, Ayers. Old bush in his first statement gets up and talks about “there’s a statute of limitations for that war”, a direct slap at Reagan and Vietnam combat veterans. Bush Sr. was what the Russians called an “apparatchik”, a bureaucrat who could never win anything other than a seat in the House of Representatives until Reagan foolishly appointed him his VP. Nancy Reagan had the good sense never to invite this low class of people to dinner at the White House.
