Proof? Suggest you research microfiches at a very good library. The internet did not exist then, so there are no links to period news articles. There are some books you might pursue about Nixon and China. Or you could just read a good history book, if they publish such things these days.

I have no idea how your fictional encounter would have turned out, especially since Russia would have been treaty-bound to come to China’s aid.

And I’ll add that Russia - China relations were quite strained in the 60s - 70s. Like to the point of the Russians massing troops and tactical nuclear weapons on their border with China. The Chinese did not back down.

Detente with the US/Nixon was to aid China and support the growing wedge between China and Russia. Russia stopped sponsoring Chinese development from the mid 1960s on after the Chinese stopped repayment of Russian ‘development loans’. Lots more bad blood between China and Russia than China and the US.
