There wasn't actually a Treaty. It was all remarkably informal but the implications were well understood and it worked well for the duration. My understanding of anything formalised was in a 1984 +/- Sino-British Declaration which arrived at a July 1997 exit date for the British but I don't recall it being called a "treaty". When 1997 rolled around, on the basis of that 1980s declaration, the Brits had to clear out. Last time I was there it appeared they had and the time before that.
