If you look at the numbers, NYC is the epicenter and its not out of control in any other part of the country.

Northern NJ and Detroit have problems, but the rest of their states are doing ok.

According to the IHME model, New York peaked six days ago on April 10, and is on its projected decline now. The same for Michigan. There is no need for states that have peaked and are on the way down to extend stay-at-home or shutdowns.

This is the time start talking about loosening restrictions on the lower risk areas and places that have no cases at all. The governors making extensions are risking civil unrest for nothing at all.

I think what this is as an admission that the state does not have the ability to target selected areas of the state such as the North Country for opening due to a lack of personnel, testing, expertise, etc. As I understood it a couple of days ago, they will target openings based on essential/non-essential criteria, risk of infection, etc.

My guess is that it will take time to sink in, but Cuomo is not going to get a blank check to make the state entirely whole. Especially if other states are opening up sooner, which sounds like will be the case. As such, a prediction that the standard of living for many New Yorkers will take years at a minimum to return where it was, and for some it will never return to the same level.

I suspect the people upstate will simply accelerate what had been a slow exodus south; NY has lost 20 seats in the House of Representatives between 1980 and 2010
