Andrew Johnson was from a southern state. And he was President because Lincoln was shot by a southerner. Johnson was Lincoln’s VP.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, and was likely assigned to a battalion staff position. There are specific requirements to qualify for a CIB, one of them is to receive a Purple Heart while serving in an infantry position. He certainly qualified under this criteria.

No, he was an infantry captain, in the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry. Interestingly, he never commanded an infantry company during his Iraq tour. He became a company commander after the battalion returned to Ft. Lewis at the end of their deployment. I knew the Battalion Commander and the Command Sergeant Major, two better soldiers never lived. This was not a mistake or oversight, he wasn't given a command while soldiers lives were at risk. He got the job during the period of reorganization, rebuild, and retraining where he would not get anyone killed. I have read elsewhere that he was not by respected by the soldiers of his company.
