“But the thing that I call the real mortality rate (number dead vs. number who have already beaten it), as presented by other FReepers, is over 50%.”

Meaningless.

You can’t prove a negative which is partly what that poster was grasping at.

Again, what is the NATURE of those who are in ICU or die?

Are they already compromised (including are they doing ANY treatment or just suffering)? Is it killing off many who are perfectly strong?

Many other countries have shut off Chinese nationals altogether.

Why can’t we?

It’s not like China is doing business right now. Google China, for example, is shut for at least 2 weeks. Likely much much longer.

Most Chinese cities are shut down until mid/end Feb right now. Likely longer.

The nature of those in the ICU is male and over 45 or so.

According to the chinese figures.

We really have no idea yet.

I really like the people who say ‘oh, this just kills old people’. Like they deserve it or something.

This kills WAY more old people than the flu. Way.

You want to change the demographics and election in this country? Kill 2-3% of the over 50’s. Those are Trump voters.

I’m not against shutting off travel.

I just haven’t seen yet how dangerous this is.

We still have no solid reports on the “prior condition” of those who died (NO, I’m not saying THEY DESERVE IT, for God’s sake). It’s still looking like a small %.

I’m not overly worried yet.

Let’s be cautious for now, but not freak out, and we’ll see how it goes.

Ebola - now THAT was scary. That was a high mortality rate and real rough treatment and recovery. That angered me that they didn’t do more to curb that travel, but we got past it for now.

You’re so worried about the election and that’s why you want to keep elder people healthy?

Look, I wasn’t too happy losing rock-solid conservatives in my father on Thanksgiving, OR 7 years ago my sister who was not “elderly”. Both to cancer. But it’s not the main reason I don’t want to lose them.

25% of those infected will need an ICU bed.

How many of those do we have?

The cases in Germany went like this:

Woman (chinese) in shanghai (employee of german automaker) was visited by her parents, from Wuhan, in mid January.

On jan 21, she traveled to Germany and met with her coworkers there for class/training. Then flew home. She was asymptomatic the whole time she was in Germany.

She infected 3 of her coworkers (so far) and one of them has managed to infect someone else also.

I’ve read that the Chinese women has either never become symptomatic or did so only on returning to china.

This disease progression isn’t unlike ebola. The mortality rate is much lower, but the morbidity is astounding. We simply don’t have the ICU beds if this gets going here.

Your math is wrong .
This Chinese virus issue had been going for more than 2 weeks .
It was only reported here until recently .
We have Chinese direct flight into includes Hawaii , Alaska , Marshall Island, and the 25 plus US airports plus
Who knows how many private Charter flights to additional locations .
And then the indirect flights from Mexico , Canada. and S America .
Lax first infected Chinese was a flight from Mexico City .
Its millions by now .
Only those who travel noticed the invasion first .
Odd who the US media been quiet.
Overseas the DM has written about the matter .

It’s not just the elderly.

This will wreck our economy if it gets going here.

I’m not sure why people seem to think chicom nationals, currently coming from a country experiencing a deadly pandemic, are somehow ENTITLED to enter this country.

I’m astounded.

Being a large majority of Americans get flu shots, there may be a chance the strain mutates to a lesser strain. Who knows?

My math is not wrong, using your few numbers. The bluster of “millions” - only 1 million for 1 day let’s assume - and 350 seats. That’s all. For 1 day it would take that many flights to reach here IF they were 100% filled with Chinese.

Spread it out some more, sure, for maybe 4 weeks.

It’s still alot to assume there are millions of Chinese who have come here. Let’s say you mean “2 million”, and it’s over 4 weeks.

That is 71k to 72k people PER DAY coming from China (direct OR indirect). Seriously, you think that many Chinese are coming in daily? Wow. I guess it’s possible, but not likely.

I’m all for travel bans. They don’t even have to be long. Just timely and being cautious.

I can’t wait to see how my smug self-righteous college president pontificates about THIS issue, since she was so defiant of Trump on the ME travel ban never mind illegals detentions.

I’ve seen SJW’s on twitter argue that this is a ‘racist chinese ban’ (probably 50c army posters some of them).

because china is a race (not a country). And coronavirus is just like a religion. Or something.

Poster on the Schlicter thread thinks we’re doing swab tests of incoming chicoms at the airport.

This is what the public thinks when they hear ‘but we’re screening at the airport’.

I got a lecture on how thermal imaging stopped the SARS outbreak in the early 2000s. And because that was a coronavirus and this is a coronavirus, they must be exactly the same wrt symptoms, contagious, incubation, etc.

LOL.

They only got a wide use blood test up and running in the past 10 days. Much less swabs and distributed to all the airports. Or the fact that the workers would need to be in BL3 suits (minimum) and the swabs themselves handled the same.

Go to any major us airports .
They are.
Atlanta is looking like Hong Kong .
Then these people mob our hospitals and bankrupt them .
Chinese nationals will flee home not pay .
Trust me they do in SF all the time .

“In America, 50 gajillion die from the flu every year and in China, only 10 whole people die from flu!”

____________

Heh! That is not far off from official Chinese mainland figures =>

“The total number of flu deaths last year was 144, compared with 56 in 2016 and 41 in 2017.”
