If they choose to attack the U.S. directly, or attack U.S ships in international waters from Iran, then they've then escalated this to the point where we could start striking military targets within Iran itself. And if it is a battle to see who could do the most damage to the other nation...Iran loses that hands down.
I expect we will play leap frog and hit the ayatollah and govt hard..let the country reform, if its that again, maybe they will be friendly for a hundred years...

I wonder how much sentiment there is on the right today for the reportedly downtrodden anti-government Iranians who wish they could live lives free of tight religious restrictions—as in overthrow the government of Iran.? They had riots kept off the internet for months now.
Do we spare the good Iranians and endanger ourselves? A lot of decisions were made in past wars about that.
Trump reminded us about foreign involvements in the early campaign for 2016 “We give them billions and billions in aid and we protect them by risking and losing the lives of our armed forces and then later they spit on us and turn against us anyway.”(paraphrased).
ISIS and al Qaeda elements did come from the Sunni tribes.

He is taking out the Iranian leaders causing the problems personally, which makes him popular both at home and in Iran

Yep, it sure is. This moron just gave a green-light for our Navy to blow any Iranian "speed boat" right out of the water if it comes to within a half-mile of any of our ships too.
(I'm no military or Navy expert so please don't criticize my 'half-mile' distance. IMO any Iranian military craft should be blown out of the water as quickly as possible. They asked for it!)

Not that far-fetched. Both Graham and Hannity are close to Trump and yesterday on his radio show they were hinting at taking out Iran’s 3 major oil refineries. Petroleum is the life blood of any military and in the case of Iran, it’s whole national economy. Such a strike would weaken the national government to the point where there would be a good chance of them losing power quickly considering the unrest of the populace. I’m thinking that conversation may not have been an accident, but rather a back-channel signal.
“It’s time to take out the Iranian Navy.”
Hell, the message to Iran is: “we just took out your #2 leader, any more foolishness and we’ll take out #1 next”.

LOL. The Iranians are not going to do sh*t. This is the stuff of Baghdad Bob. The consequences for Iran of an attack against our Navy would be disastrous. Iran is a target rich environment. Ports, ships, refineries, electrical grid, etc. The failing economy of Iran could be totally destroyed for generations in just a few hours.
I wonder if we have a very low yield nuke to use on their nuke facilities so that the radiation could be attributed to their own facility?
Someone else has already thought of this so the only remaining question is it possible?
At this point, the ball is in Iran's court. If they want to escalate by attacking our ships, then we get to attack their shore facilities, which are a hell of a lot more vulnerable than are our ships.
Prior to that, forces under the direction and control of Iran (and, indeed, admitting to being under the command of the late General S.) -- Iraqi Shiite militias -- invaded US sovereign territory -- the US Embassy in Baghdad -- threatening its occupants and destroying property within that territory.
That would appear to meet the definition of war as well.
