The Iranians are thought to have something like 1500-2500 land based ASM of various sorts embedded withing the mountains along the coast. The plan is to sink a carrier. They need sink only one. They have been preparing for this battle for 30 years.
Again, the U.S. Navy hasn’t been sitting around playing solitaire for the last 30 years.

Absolutely they do. Do you think the Russian and Chinese will stay on the sideline? Do you really think that they will not be supporting Iran directly? A war with Iran will be much more Korean or Vietnam than the Gulf wars. We have become accustomed to standoff firepower with little risk to much of our technology advantage. This will not be the case...we will lose ships and much of the war will be outside of country.
WWII: over 4 Million Japanese casualties.

China :23 Million casualties.
Maybe not so much...
U.S. : Somewhere around 900 Thousand.
Germany: 4 Million or so;
The Soviets lost 34 million lives.
Is that a war plan?
Total population of Iran: around 83 Million,
Military: < 600 Thousand, half of them are conscripts.
U.S. military ~ 1.4 Million 100% volunteer.
I like the odds.
On top of that to paraphrase Oddball from Kelly’s Heroes high tech can give you a very nice edge.
Unfortunately, while we have an incredible advantage, we also do not have the political will to finish wars or do what needs to be done to outright win them. The anti-war propaganda media wins out over time. You think it is strong now, let 20,000 dead come home in a year...ship sinking.... We get involved full on in Iran, it will not be quick or clean. Not at all... Then China makes a move in the Pacific.
Even the most fearful rabbits in the Warren don’t believe that China is a military superpower at this point. China is believed to be an economic superpower in a way, but I own some Chinese high-tech...

In truth, all that China can supply in an actual WAR in 2020 is corpses.
I was part of the U.S. military that brought down the Soviet Union. I do not fear Russian involvement in Iran.
I could be wrong, and so could you, but surrender before the first shot is fired is about as unAmerican as anything I’ve ever heard.
I cede nothing. I was also on the front lines of ending the USSR. There are books written on the escapades I was involved in. We can utterly destroy them. We did so in Iraq and Afghanistan...yet we really haven’t won the long term peace that we have seen after WWII. This conflict will not be the same as the last. It will be brutal. The US Navy has SERIOUS concerns about operating along the coast of Iran, and for good reason. We will put their entire Navy on the bottom in 3 hours, but it will likely not be clean. Not sure the American folks are ready for that. Do not under estimate the enemy. We have done a SHIT TON of work to provide victory, but this victory will be much different and costly than the last....this will not be Saddam launching Scuds.
