Could it emit, at the speed of light with the visual event, that gamma ray life extinguishing blast that would end all life on earth?

Yeah. It's the sort of dull orange/reddish one. Some theorize it's already exploded some time ago.

Betelgeuse will explode? Blame climate change.
We’re having an unusually warm winter? Blame climate change.
You’re having an unusually cold winter? Blame climate change.
President Trump is re-elected? Blame climate change.
You’re constipated? Blame...well, you get the picture.

Bored writer in need of some filler to phone-in.
I’ve been reading this same story for the past 34 years. Same sensationalist headline too.

So, assuming Betelgeuse leaves a remnant nebula similar to M1 in Taurus, it will be similar in angular size to the full moon, about 0.5 degrees, dwarfing the current “star” of Orion, M42. I’m sure it would be fascinating to watch.

I think the number of variable stars is considerable. The Cepheid variables vary in brightness in a regular way which lets astronomers calculate how far away they are. Algol is a variable because it is a binary system and its light dims when one of the stars eclipses the other (from our standpoint). Some variable stars are more erratic like Eta Carinae.
It all means that eventually we are all going to die.

“Could Betelgeuse, whose variability intensified in a novel way over the last few days, be about to explode?”
I don’t know who this Betelgeuse guy is, but if he has dirt on the Clinton’s, then yes he will likely explode.
But it will be ruled suicide.

I thought I heard it said that it could be in the next 200,000 years....hard for a non-scientist to get excited about it today....
