I agree with your sentiment however Washington loves political theater. It is intoxicating to them. They all crave attention and love the (unproductive) drama of politics.
Stop with the fear mongering.
It's too soon to tell - but it's very worrying.
People are quibbling and obsessing over details that don't matter.
The Schiff hearings are a farce. The Nadler Judiciary proceeding will be a farce as well. There are 235 Democrats in the House, they need 217 to impeach (assuming Amash is the only Republican), they have the votes, THAT is a done deal.
But Democrats cannot remove the President. The evidence does not matter. The rules do not matter. The polls do not matter. What you or I or anyone else thinks about this means less than zero. There are 47 certain Democrat votes to remove, and they need 67.
So, to answer your question, you have to discern what is going on in the Senate GOP caucus.
The omens are not good. We know there are not enough votes in the caucus to dismiss. We know this because the majority leader says so.
We know there are Senators in the caucus that will support removal, such that a majority to remove of 51 or 52 is probable (47D + Collins, Murkowski, Romney, and maybe a few others).
But 67 is a stretch unless you believe as I do that when this goes to the Senate floor the GOP caucus will be presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to defend and solidify the Swamp (Slimy? Mudhole? My home this is!).
Pro-Trump people like myself have greatly underestimated the damage the 2015-2016 nominating process did to the GOP. If Trump "gets away with it", billions of dollars in bribes and graft will be lost to the members of the GOP Senate caucus, maybe forever.
None of the details of this process matter a hill of beans. The ONLY thing that matters is whether or not 38% of the GOP Senators love the swamp more than their country.
38%. That's all it will take. That being the case, you certainly have to be concerned.
In my opinion it's destroyed already, which is why Trump is President and also why the President is in danger.
Trump got nominated because he exposed the fact that SIXTEEN real Republicans who were presented as leaders of their party and well-qualified to be President were SO hollow, so void of any quality whatsoever, that a man like Trump (and I love the guy) could sweep them aside like they were nothing.
He could sweep them aside like they were nothing because they WERE nothing.
A party with nothing to offer is dead already.
STOP with the "Democrats" already!
The Democrats are 100% irrelevant to the outcome in the Senate.
The problem Trump has is a problem with REPUBLICANS, specifically Republican Senators.
Statutes cannot be changed without the legislative process. But rules can be. Often they are set before the proceedings begin.
Many of the Republican senators will see this as an opportunity, and try to get something in return for their vote. Delay the wall, increased immigration, special projects, middle east deployments, etc, I am sure they are salivating at the opportunity this holds.
Well, either that, or other Senators...Trump supporters, are "talking to them" detailing how "Trump has everything".
Wow!
You put “Romney” and “honest” in the same sentence.
Ha! They wouldn,t need to—the corrupt, uniparty RINOs would never do it.
The current crop of Rats are pretty well nothing.
Last week on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, she asked Lindsey Graham about this.
He said:
“We can go to a floor vote if we have to. We can vote by majority to allow subpoenas from the committee.”
We lost our chance at an “unbreakable” majority in 2018 when we failed to bring Renaicci, James, Rosendale, and McSally across.
2020 senate wise is not nearly as favorable with more R seats to defend.
I disagree. Schumer won’t agree to any depublican called witnesses while Mitch will roll over for any Schumer calls. Witnesses and evidence will be limited to pretty much what the House forwards. Mitch is setting it up to screw Trump.
Impeccable logic. The ensuing hysteria and pressure will wobble the knees of the Republican senators. The first glimpse we will get is how they react to a Ginsburg opening. Anyone showing squeamishness over holding a Supreme Court confirmation can be also counted on to support impeachment.
This would not make any sense,..
Agree. I said the same on a different thread.
It would cause a stalemate every time and no trial could go forward.
Besides, there can be no fair trial if one side can prevent the other side from calling witnesses and presenting evidence. It makes no sense.
I think the fact that House Democrats got away with this one-sided kangaroo court Schiff Show has everyone confused, but lets be clear:
An impeachment hearing is not a trial - there is no legal consequence and that is why there is no requirement that it be fair. Impeachment is basically the prosecution making an accusation, to help the court (the Senate) decide whether a trial is justified.
The House impeachment hearings were unfair not because it was run by Democrats, but rather because impeachment hearings dont have to be fair, since there are no legal consequences.
Conversely, the Senate trial WILL be run fairly, not because the Republicans are running it, but because as a real trial, in a real court of law, having legal consequences, it is required to be fair.
When this matter goes to the Senate, everything will change. It will be fair. The President will be able to mount a defense. There will be none of the BS we saw in the House impeachment hearings. No one will be allowed to behave like Adam Schiff behaved.
And since he is guilty of no crimes, and since his accusers are guilty of plenty, things ought to get quite interesting - IF the Democrats let it go to the Senate.
And there is a real good chance they wont.
Schumer ain’t calling the shots and witnesses can not be blocked by him.
Cocaine Mitch and Lindsey Graham are running the show and can even overcome an obstacle with Judge Roberts if needed with a simple majority vote.
I recommend this video done on all of this recently by a decades long operative who worked on the PA Trump campaign:
