Well, looking back at the aritcle, it mentions “quietest” roads. Maybe they were checking the sound levels or something?

That could be. The road across the UP was paved, but virtually no traffic. There was nothing but swamp land on both sides of the road. It was definitely the most lonely road I had ever been on.

Lol! We pulled over, all got out of the car, and laid on the pavement in October, and took pictures of us laying on the loneliest road in America! 2007

There is a considerable amount of nothing on CA SR 139. Watch for cows on the road...

Ive been on that road stuck behind a herd of cattle...entertained by a large bull getting romantic.

Here's a really remote road: The Trans-Taiga Highway in Northern Quebec. At the end of it you're 463 miles from the nearest town.

It is a pitiful map. That woman who put it together must have lived in NYC and only seen Central Park.

I drove on a road that was a road on the map but it was still being blasted and carved thru the Wyoming wilderness back in 1988. I left from Newcastle. Driving very slow and my car was bouncing up and down for miles. I saw a motorhome coming the other way and figured the inside will spill all the contents or the walls would collapse. We were the only 2 vehicles on that ‘road’.
