A few guesses. It is close to Minnesota, which was a reliably Democratic state for years. The demographics in Northeast Iowa are similar to those in Minnesota, so rural counties there went Democrat when other rural counties in the country went Republican. Other parts of the state are more conservative.
Also, for a long time they had a relatively homogeneous population, and so there was less opposition to social programs, a situation similar to that in the Scandinavian countries. There wasn't competition between groups or a sense that some were getting more than others or more than they put in. That may be changing.
But mostly I think it's the fact that they have the first caucus in the country. That means that people are encouraged to be political, and both progressives and conservatives are more outspoken. If your state, wherever it is, had the first primary or caucus in the country you'd have more of these people appearing in the news.
Never underestimate the stupidity of the Leftist educated masses.

The only people I know who live in Iowa are my wife's relatives who are all hard-core conservatives.
It was inexplicable to me why there were so many liberals there in the breadbasket of the nation. It's not urban, for sure.

It’s simple. A lot of people fled Chicago and brought their leftist idiocy with them. It’s like a virus.
Leftists have turned the public education system into socialist education camps, and higher education is for advanced degrees in communism.

I just heard Brian Kilmeade's radio show while working out in the barn.
Some guy called in who said his whole family (his in-laws, his parents and his wife) had always voted democRAT but they don't keep up with the current state of the party and how far Left they have moved in the last few elections.
He said he has tried to sit them down and explain to them that the democRAT party is not the same party of old but is socialist now, almost Marxist communist, in their ideas and policies and they won't listen....because they don't believe it's true.
And that's what the democRATS are counting on. That regular folks will not realize how far Left the party has repositioned itself into a Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea mentality of governing. Tyranny basically.
My parents were democRATS back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. But they would be Republicans today if they were still alive, because they were very conservative working class people. Not democRATic Socialists or Marxist communists like AO-C or Bernie Sanders and others.
They would have been aghast at the party trying to take their guns away from them. Or at their sanctuary city and open borders policies with regards to illegal aliens. Or at their hate of Christians and God. And I could go on and on.
Yes, the progressive, liberal Leftist politicians and their ideas and policies are just like an unchecked virus. Infecting everything they come in contact with.
