This is what I recall as well.
I also had a discussion with an Uber engineer working on it (conference) - autumn creates a similar problem, when cars drive over lots of leaves they all fly up into the air. It currently causes problems.
These are the types of scenarios that these cars have problems with. Is an object something to be concerned with? They can detect everything but they’re still in the “making sense of it all” phase (perception). ...they just need (ever) more neural network horsepower is the claim.
The driver should have had it explicitly explained that the vehicle was not prepared to detect objects in the dark (no LiDAR) and it requires 100% attention to avoid an incident. Even then, I question the wisdom of this vehicle driving with such a handicap - there’s a reason they have an array of sensors. One of the main problems, that I’ve heard a bunch of times, is these test drivers paying attention, or even falling asleep. It gets really boring.
They will eventually save lots of lives but this was inevitable. Maybe the requirement should be to have two drivers - each with a brake pedal available to them at all times. A lone driver that is bored isn’t much of a backup.
Exactly...you cannot order a human being to pay attention 100% of the time. If you add boredom to the equation it gets worse. Even worse is to have alarms go off that are ALMOST always false. It is a bit deal in nursing, as it trains them to ignore the alarm. And if you throw in the occasional fatal consequence to either...blaming the poor sap who did what nature intends...being taught stupid things and then making them fully responsible for a one in million...or hundred thousand event...is sad.
DK
I hope the victims family goes after the state for allowing it’s citizens to be “Test” subjects for these companies.
Hammer them good $$.
“If some other driver is approaching a stop sign on a sifted road ahead of me way too fast, I slow way down anticipating him or her blowing through the stop sign. It shouldnt be hard to program that behavior into a self driving car.”
One of the things that I always do at stop signs is look to see if cross-traffic also has a stop sign* - and respond accordingly. Since that is more common in Neanderthal red areas of the country, I doubt that Silicone Valley has given it any thought.
As to what you’re saying, it certainly is possible (and easy) for software to detect a car about to blow through a stop sign or red light....but it kind of seems that if that were to occur, then who cares!!! Since the crash will be the fault of the other party.
*unfortunately, in a number of ‘quaint’ towns, particularly in Maine, the idea of an octagon from for stop signs is just too ‘red’ for them to allow - and when checking for stop-signs for cross-traffic, the shape of the sign is usually all you can see.
LOL, they probably had to hire a bunch of programmers just to account for that.
There are billions being spent on a product that most people dont want, drivers and pedestrians both.
One of the government officials testifying after Chernobyl said it best: Science requires victims.
This would be tough to program. Say for example a toddler and a say like a raccoon. If you’re going 70 and you would cause accidents if you brake for the raccoon you’re going to hit the raccoon. If it’s a toddler though you’re going to brake no matter what. How do you program a car to tell the difference?
It wasn’t too long ago when nobody wanted a PC, a laptop, a CD player, an iPad, a SmartPhone or 500 tv channels, either.
“If you build it, they will come” is truer than ever. I’m glad for the visionaries building products I don’t want and don’t think I need.
With one exception - California high speed trains. Nobody needs or wants them and they will only avoid bankruptcy via massive and perpetual government cash infusions.
Are you talking about sober drivers? Or little or ladies, drunks, drivers impaired by both legal and illegal drugs? Or states with legalized pot? Or drivers distracted by their mobile phones? There were 6,227 pedestrian deaths in 2018, the rate is going to be higher this year.
To be honest, as technology improves it will be a safer solution.
As I originally wrote, it was murder by car, by Uber, and an inattentive driver. These cars should not have been on the road and should not be on the road. Vilifying the lady, dismissing her because she was poor and maybe homeless does not alter these facts that were obvious from day one.
She was seen, the car and driver ignored her and did not slow down. Then, the car moved to the right turn lane and ran her down. If the car and driver cannot see where they are goingdriving blindthey should slow down or stop. They did not until they murdered the woman.
A lot of words but you didn’t answer my question. As for me, I’d always want to cross in front of a human being as I can evaluate exactly what they’re doing regardless of their age, mental state, etc.
I know some owners of cars that have driver assist technology. What it amounts to is “lane warnings” and “auto-braking”. The first reaction of all of them is being startled the first time the car jams on it’s own brakes in a situation where they were getting ready to accelerate around a slower car on the 4-lane. The first time my car did that while I was attempting to steer & power out of a “situation” I would be looking to disable that feature. But I’m an old-head, and I fully realize that this is going to be “The future”. I think the design data derived from Driver Assist is going to refine the self-driving engineering concept... eventually.
That will cut down jay walking!
There are millions of people: seniors, new drivers, the handicapped, etc. who might not want a fully autonomous car, but who would welcome an electronic co-pilot.
Don't deprive them of a little assistance.
When Delta gets rid of the pilots, then maybe it is time for an autonomous car. Otherwise it is insanity.
“Its garden-variety programming, as you just admitted.”
All we need now for these “self-driving” cars is a bumper sticker thats says “I Brake for Unidentified Pixels”.
This entire self-driving car idea is a disaster waiting to happen. Fascinating idea, but the technology is just not there yet IMO.
