The place is great, but it is England’s problem, not ours.

When working at the joint U.S./British naval base on Andros Island Ba. I ventured out to a little town called “Fresh Creek” and made friends with some of the locals. They were so proud of their humble abodes. Cardboard and aluminum huts with dirt floors. But for a dirt floor the place was spotless and “homey”. The children were clean, well dressed and courteous. They were a happy people who had nothing, but yet more than I ever had. They were so kind and showed me around their little village introducing me to other families who were colorfully dressed, impeccably clean, and very hospitable. They all had the same dirt floored huts. Being with them was one of my fondest memories. I hope they are ok. They didn’t need much to begin with but are a resilient people and I know they will get back to the cute little town I was envious of. If only a person could designate their contribution to a particular community. I may have to go down there myself.

Taiwan was hit by a Cat 5 a few months after New Orleans was hit. 2 dead and very little property damage. They build stuff to last through storms and earthquakes. I have watched construction over there and am impressed.

The difference is the people.

There is steady work in the Bahamas for the next 10 years.

Many fortunes will be made.

The difference here should be ...

Unlike Puerto Rico and those that came two years ago and the right they had to vote here.

There should be no voting rights here from these migrants this storm.

You’re right Bahamas are not a poor country.

Tens of millions of $$$ roll in every month from tourists and the cruise industry. Seems like they chose as always, unwisely what to do with all that loot.

Provide them shelter, food, water and medical needs ASAP. Even in tent cities. Then let us help THEM rebuild their Island. Do not bring 70,000 into the U.S. They will never leave. Who will rebuild their Island if they come here?

Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

What’s 70k anyway??

That’s just about an average migration from the southern boarder.

They never leave either. Plus they get all bennies plus motor voter.

President and Repubs to convert a big hunk of blacks in the US by not bringing them here but develop a Marshall-like plan to build many per-stressed concrete homes for the Bahamians, teach them business skills and help them develop an economy of their own.

Furnish them with insulated concrete forms (ICF), Steel shutters, pressure treated 2X8s, nails, hammers, hand saws, etc. and concrete.

A one day class, building as they learn.

The forms stack like Legos, cut windows and doors with hand saws and frame with the pressure treated wood.

Very simple, and they get hurricane resistant houses.

You give the men the hammer and the nails and show them how to use tools.

There are those ships that constantly went from Palm Beach to Freeport. Nothing for tourists to go to now, use those ships.

Where’s Great Britain in all this? Not a mention in the article. It was all UN and US based help agencies.

The Bahamas are a British Commonwealth, a state if you will. Britain should be out front leading the recovery efforts.

Maybe President Trump could send an email to the Queen:

We’ll continue to help but you’re paying for it. We’ll send you a bill.

Fair’s fair.

In terms of gross domestic product per capita, the Bahamas is one of the richest countries in the Americas (following the United States and Canada), with an economy based on tourism and finance.

Since these islands are a tax haven for rich corporations and wealthy part-time globe trotters, I say the US taxpayer gives them very little beyond advice on how to build a better “straw house”. None of the residents pay taxes either. Let some of the hotel/resort chains and cruise operators kick in their share; they make a fortune from the business they operate there.

Where’s the compassion for our Midwest farmers who’ve lost their homes, source of incomes and livestock during the devastating flooding they’ve just experienced. They don’t abandon their homes and farms and depend on others to clean up for them. They roll up their sleeves and set about reconstruction. As far as the overpopulation, there needs to be some limitation on the number of inhabitants these islands can support.

CNN is a pain in the ass with their autostart audio blasting with the volume turned all the way up. Thank goodness for Reader View. I can click the icon as soon as the CNN page is loaded and get clean, SILENT text to read. Same with Fox, even worse actually, and others.

Bahamas has been an independent country since 1973. With regard to the UK, it is an independent commonwealth realm, along with Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand — a total of 53 independent and sovereign state who work together on a range of issues.

You’d hope that FReepers would be more aware.

Went there on a cruise. Struck me that the cruise industry is much of the problem: bringing in thousands of people at once, who mostly travel to a few concentrated places for a few hours, then leave. Tourists in general contribute too, also focusing on a few high-dollar areas. Putting so much money into such a small area imbalances the economy, busses & taxis racing past residents unable to edge in to the concentrated cash. Those missing out won’t put together what else they need to build a parallel economy not beholden to the few travel behemoths, hoping instead to get in on the easy money.

Not like it’s unexpected.
Rebuild to endure, or move.

They will, however, find Florida’s cities lower-crime than their home towns.

Not for long.
