What I’ve heard is that countries with socialized medicine (their governments) force American pharmaceutical co’s. to charge less for their drugs or lose market access, thus ensuring that Americans pay more for their meds to make up the difference.

Yes. I don’t know how true it is but if so, it’s a good rejoinder to those foreigners who say we’re uncivilized for not having socialized medicine.
