From a 2014 report, a little over 3 out of every 1000 murders were committed with semi-automatic rifles. The assault weapons ban ended in 2004, and though not as popular as other firearms before 2004 (and less popular before 1994), there were many semi-automatic rifles in the civilian population before then.
