Chiang was presented as Sun Yet Sen’s heir; I don’t think he would have been easy to undermine.
The problem in some of these places is that communism actually improves the lot of people at the very bottom of the socio-economic ladder, and they have little to lose. The poorest agricultural workers on Cuba or Cambodia could easily be convinced to pick up arms to better their lot (not understanding that in the end they’ll be only marginally better off while the country collapses).
The Japanese tried backing a competitor in Manchukuo (the Manchu heir), but it never really took hold.
