The second amendment is the equivalent of mutually assured destruction between the people and the federal government. Our constitution has been shredded especially 4th amendment, due process amendments, of course 10th and now even 1st. We have rogue police state agencies at the federal level that have absolutely NO external control and that means that rogue elements within, hostile foreign powers or deep state have gained control of them. Trump has no control over them and he only escaped their grasp by the skin of his teeth.
The leftist and statists will argue that other civilized Western European countries have essentially forced their subjects to give up their guns and it happened relatively peacefully. I doubt that they could do that here. In the first place private citizens have always had many more guns per capita than they did in Europe. But secondly, the federal police state and criminal justice system here is very harsh and would they probably see fit to use extreme and violent measures to combat resisters.
