The hyperbole on the “ICE raids” is getting so out of control. The standard liberal talking point of “they’re going to be separating families, many of whom have been here for years and pay taxes” is being trotted out with fake tears and fake anger.
I am going to try to put this issue in terms that are more familiar to the average person.
Imagine that you own an apartment building with 30 apartments. Most of your tenants pay their rent on time and in full, but you have 3 tenants that have not paid their rent for several months. You follow all of the legal steps to evict these tenants, ( 3 day notice to pay or quit, filing an unlawful detainer case in court, hire an attorney to represent you in court and appear in court on the scheduled hearing date). The 3 tenants fail to pay after being served the 3 day notice. They are then served with the unlawful detainer complaint which provides them with a date to appear in court and present their defense for failure to pay their rent.
Of the 3 tenants only 1 appears in court on the date scheduled. This tenant presents his/her arguments which are basically that he/she was unable to find a job. The judge rules that that reason is not an acceptable defense and orders the tenant to vacate the property.
The other 2 tenants are found guilty of unlawful detainer, in absentia, (maintaining possession of the rental unit without paying for it), and are ordered to vacate the property.
After 30 days the final eviction order is issued and the Sheriff is ordered to remove the 3 tenants, (whom have refused to leave), from the apartments. The Sheriff follows the law, has a locksmith unlock the doors because the tenants refuse to open the door and the Sheriff physically removes the tenants and their families from the apartments, leaving all of their furniture and personal belongings inside the apartments.
The above scenario occurs daily as it applies to ICE. Illegal aliens are ordered removed from the apartment, (the United States), because they did not comply with the laws of the nation. Instead of not paying rent, though, they failed to ask for and receive permission to move into the apartment, (the U.S.), in the first place, and once their physical presence was discovered, (captured sneaking across the border or providing false information, [or information that does not meet the legal standard to be granted residency]), they are provided a court date to argue their case and most fail to appear. Those that do appear are mostly found to lack a legitimate legal reason to be granted the privilege of remaining in the U.S. ICE is ordered to remove them from the country because the court has found that they have no right to be in the U.S.
So, bottom line for me; they had their day in court, lost and must be removed. I do not care what sad stories they have. It does not matter. They, not me, put them in this situation and must live with the consequences of their choices.
